Videos circulating widely on social media have sparked concern after scenes of apparent chaos unfolded during an alleged “park-off” gathering at the N1 City Mall parking lot over the weekend.
Clips shared across multiple platforms show large groups of young people gathering in the parking area, with what appears to be unrest breaking out.
In several videos, bottles can be seen and heard being thrown even at vehicles, with the sound of smashing glass echoing across the lot. Other footage captures groups fighting in different corners, while individuals are heard shouting and screaming.
In one particularly alarming moment, a young man is seen falling in front of a moving vehicle, narrowly avoiding being run over as the driver brakes suddenly. The videos also include loud popping sounds, which many online users initially believed to be gunshots, adding to the panic reflected in the footage.
However, accounts from individuals claiming to have been at the scene suggest a different sequence of events leading up to the chaos. According to a widely shared Facebook comment, taxis reportedly arrived at the parking lot playing loud music, drawing a crowd of around 200 young people who began dancing.
The situation allegedly escalated after a cellphone was stolen, triggering tensions among those present and ultimately leading to the disorder seen in the videos.
The same account disputes claims of gunfire, suggesting that the loud noises heard were not gunshots but rather the backfiring of an older model Nissan 1400 bakkie.
Despite the viral nature of the footage, the South African Police Service (SAPS) has indicated that it has no official record of the incident. Authorities have also not confirmed whether any gunshots were fired, leaving some uncertainty around the events captured on video.
In response to media enquiries, N1 City Mall confirmed that it had received reports of "criminal incidents" in its parking area after hours on Saturday, 2 May 2026.
Mall management said that security teams responded immediately, alongside SAPS, Metro Police and emergency services.
“The safety and security of our shoppers, tenants and staff remains our highest priority,” the mall said in a statement.
“The police are investigating, and the mall will continue to work closely with law enforcement and support their efforts in every way possible. All further enquiries should be directed to SAPS.”
At this stage, it remains unclear how many people were involved, whether any injuries were reported, or if arrests have been made.
