Starbucks South Africa is shaking up its seasonal menu with the launch of the Ube Vanilla beverage range, bringing the subtle, sweet flavour of the purple yam to coffee and matcha lovers. The new line-up features Ube, a purple yam (pronounced oo-beh) traditionally used in Filipino desserts, which offers intriguing vanilla-like undertones.

The company suggests the flavour profile is "smooth, nutty and sweet with a warmth that settles in like vanilla," making it an ideal pairing for coffee or matcha. Ishan Natalie, Central Operations, Category and Coffee Excellence Lead at Starbucks South Africa, expressed enthusiasm for the new offering. "Each one has its own character. The warmth of a well-made latte, the vanilla notes, the espresso blends. These are flavours that feel like home. Ube is easy to love and even easier to order again," he said.

The full Ube Vanilla range includes six beverages:

  • Ube Vanilla Velvet Latte
  • Iced Ube Vanilla Velvet Latte
  • Iced Ube Vanilla Matcha Latte
  • Ube Vanilla Velvet Matcha Latte
  • Ube Vanilla Frappuccino®
  • Ube Vanilla Cream Frappuccino®

The Ube Vanilla range is now available at Starbucks stores across South Africa for customers looking to "indulge in the last stretch of hot summer days." Beverages can also be ordered through Uber Eats and Mr Delivery.
