Two teenage boys have been shot dead in a suspected gang-related incident in Montrose Park, Mitchells Plain.
The boys, aged 16 and 18, were shot in Veronica Road, according to Lentegeur police spokesperson Constable Navon Van Houten, who confirmed both died at the scene.
It is believed the victims were standing outside a house when a white vehicle stopped in front of them. Two unknown men wearing balaclavas allegedly got out of the vehicle and opened fire before fleeing the scene. When police arrived, the boys were declared dead on the scene.
Ward 76 councillor Avron Plaatjies said he had been informed of the shooting shortly after returning home from church.
“I have been in contact with a close family member of one of the deceased, and this is truly heartbreaking. At this stage, the motive for the shooting remains unknown.
“I urge the police to urgently bring the perpetrators to book and provide the necessary policing services to the community to prevent any retaliation in the area. My thoughts and prayers go out to the affected families. May the Almighty comfort you during this difficult time of bereavement,” he said.
Michael Jacobs, chairperson of Lentegeur Community Police Forum (CPF), said the CPF condemns the killing of the two young people in Montrose Park on Wednesday evening and calls on police to ensure visibility and urgently track down those responsible. He also extended condolences to the families of the deceased.
No arrests have been made, said Constable Van Houten.
Anyone with information about the incident or the suspicious vehicle is urged to contact Lentegeur police station on 021 377 5000.
