School children at risk: a look at recent violent incidents in South Africa

Learners and parents were overcome with grief as they mourned their fellow learner Junaide September who was stabbed to death in Elsies River.

The fatal stabbing of Junaide September, a high school learner from Elsies River, is just the latest in a list of killings in which school going children were victims. The following is a list of some of the incidents in which school children were victims in Gauteng and the Western Cape. 

Gauteng province

  • Danté Diederik (16): A special-needs learner from Pro-Practicum School, stabbed to death while eating breakfast at his bus stop in Toekomsrus. One minor has been arrested.

  • Forest High School Learner (17): Beaten and stabbed at Rotunda Park after school on March 20; he later died in the hospital.

  • Daleview Secondary Learner (Grade 12): Stabbed to death on March 23 while walking home through an open veld in Ennerdale.

  • Badirile Secondary Learner (Grade 9): Fatally stabbed during a fight at school in Khutsong on March 12.

Western Cape province

  • Atlantis Secondary Learner (14): A Grade 8 girl killed outside the school gates during a taxi-related shooting that also claimed the driver's life.

  • Alnika Mitchell (14): Shot and killed in Kensington while watching matric farewell celebrations.

  • Lushaan Hendricks (16): A Grade 9 learner from Crystal High, killed in gang crossfire in Hanover Park.

  • Uzair Bedeker (17): A talented soccer player gunned down in Mitchells Plain.

  • Zechariah Matthee (9): Shot and killed inside a home in Rocklands along with two adults.

  • Valhalla High School Learner, Junaide September (17): Stabbed to death during a robbery in Elsies River.
