South Africa’s tourism sector continues its strong post-pandemic rebound, with the country recording over 7.6 million international tourist arrivals between January and September 2025, a significant milestone signalling renewed global confidence in the nation as a top travel destination.

According to the latest data released by the Department of Tourism, 7,634,261 visitors entered the country during this period, an increase of more than 1.1 million compared to the same time last year.

Acting Government Spokesperson Sandile Nene described the results as “an impressive increase” that reflects “sustained recovery and renewed confidence in South Africa as a premier global tourism destination.”

Nene said the figures point to steady year-on-year improvement across key markets in Africa, Europe, and Asia.

“The steady year-on-year improvement signals that South Africa remains an accessible, diverse and competitive global destination,” he said.

He added that the growth affirms government’s efforts to strengthen the tourism industry as a key driver of inclusive economic development.

“The rising numbers also affirm government’s efforts to expand the tourism sector, stimulate economic growth and create much-needed jobs for local communities,” Nene said.

Government attributes part of this success to the international attention generated by South Africa’s G20 Presidency, which has already seen the country host more than 130 preparatory meetings in various provinces.

“These gatherings have provided a unique platform to showcase South Africa’s tourism offerings, hospitality, and modern infrastructure to thousands of international delegates,” Nene noted.

Highlighting the country’s diverse appeal, Nene said South Africa’s tourism strengths “remain unmatched, from iconic wildlife experiences and breathtaking landscapes to vibrant cultural heritage and the welcoming spirit of ubuntu.”

He further assured travellers that the government is working with industry partners to ensure a safe and enjoyable festive season.

“As the festive season approaches, both domestic and international visitors can expect strengthened safety measures, improved infrastructure, and coordinated law-enforcement efforts,” he said.

With the sector’s momentum showing no sign of slowing, officials are optimistic that tourism will continue to be a key pillar in South Africa’s economic growth and job creation drive.
