The Department of Forestry, Fisheries, and the Environment has refuted allegations that the Kruger National Park has been renamed.
According to the department, there has been no amendment to the park's name under Section 20 of the National Environmental Management: Protected Areas Act 57 of 2003. This confirmation underscores the park's continued status as one of South Africa's most cherished natural treasures.
Minister Dr Dion George said there is nothing in progress to change the name of the Kruger National Park.
"I certainly have no intention of approving any request," he added.
The department explained that, as mandated by the legislation, only the Minister possesses the authority to assign or amend the name of any national park. Schedule 2 of the Act explicitly lists the official names of national parks, with Kruger National Park documented under Item 11.
It said to alter this name, a formal legislative process must be initiated, which includes public consultation and the publication of a notice in the Government Gazette, none of which have occurred regarding the Kruger National Park.
The Department has taken a firm stand against the circulation of misinformation, urging individuals and entities to refrain from propagating unverified claims about the park's name.
“Spreading misinformation undermines public confidence and distracts from the real work of conservation,” the department stated.
