Orlando Pirates were crowned 2025/26 Betway Premiership champions following a dramatic 2–0 victory over Orbit College at the Mbombela Stadium on Saturday — sealing their first league title in 14 years in truly extraordinary circumstances.

The Buccaneers’ historic title triumph was secured in highly unusual fashion, with both goals coming via catastrophic own goals from the struggling Mswenko Boys, as Pirates crucially edged out long-time rivals Mamelodi Sundowns by a single point in a tense finale to the domestic season.

The result also emphatically ended Sundowns’ eight-year domestic dominance and confirmed a historic domestic treble for Pirates, following earlier silverware successes in the MTN8 and Carling Knockout Cup.

Orbit College, on the other hand, suffered heartbreaking automatic relegation into the Motsepe Foundation Championship after results elsewhere went entirely against them, with Magesi narrowly clinching the relegation play-off spot.

The decisive moment of the final day arrived in first-half stoppage time when Thalente Mbatha’s relentless pressing inside the penalty area forced Orbit goalkeeper Sabelo Nkomo into a catastrophic error.

Under immense pressure, the keeper punched the ball directly into his own net — handing Pirates a priceless 1–0 lead at the absolute perfect time. It was a cruel blow for Orbit, who had defended bravely for much of the opening stanza but ultimately buckled under sustained pressure from the Soweto giants.

That breakthrough shifted the emotional weight of the contest firmly in Pirates’ favour heading into the interval — with Abdeslam Ouaddou’s side fully aware that absolute control of their own destiny was within reach.

However, the second half began in even more chaotic fashion, as Pirates doubled their advantage almost immediately after the restart. In bizarre scenes, Orbit defender Ndumiso Ngiba turned the ball into his own net just moments into the half — compounding a night of total misery for the hosts and effectively sealing the league title for the rampant Buccaneers.

Despite the comfortable scoreline, the opening stages of the match had not been straightforward for Pirates. Orbit College set up with an incredibly disciplined and compact defensive structure, deeply frustrating the visitors early on and limiting available space in the final third. Pirates dominated the early possession statistics but initially struggled to break through the stubborn opposition lines.

As the half wore on, however, the offensive pressure intensified. Yanela Mbuthuma bravely led the line despite carrying a noticeable fitness knock, while Simphiwe Selepe and Mbatha controlled the midfield rhythm with steady circulation and progressive forward intent. Orbit attempted occasional counter-attacks but rarely threatened the Pirates defence in any meaningful way.

The clearest chance before the breakthrough arrived in the 33rd minute when Oswin Appollis initiated a sharp attacking move. The ball fell to Tshepang Moremi in a highly promising position, but he blazed over from close range — a modern moment that underlined Pirates’ growing frustration in front of goal despite their macro dominance.

By the time Mbatha’s pressure finally broke Orbit’s resistance, Pirates had already registered eight attempts on goal, though only three were officially on target. Their sheer persistence, however, ultimately proved entirely decisive — even if the grand breakthrough arrived via a stroke of fortune rather than clinical precision.

At the final whistle, euphoric celebrations erupted across Nelspruit as Pirates confirmed a long-awaited league crown, achieved through resilience, suffocating pressure, and a remarkable slice of fortune on a day that will be remembered forever in South African football history.
