Oswin Appollis is not surprised by his impressive start to life at Orlando Pirates, but insists that prioritising the team’s objectives is more important than chasing personal glory.
Appollis has been one of Pirates’ standout signings this season, fitting seamlessly into both the club’s system and coach Abdeslam Ouaddou’s philosophy, thanks to his work rate in front of goal.
His contributions have paid dividends, helping the team secure a cup double – the MTN8 and Carling Knockout – while also remaining in contention for the Betway Premiership title. He has registered 11 goals and nine assists in 38 matches across all competitions.
His form has also translated to the South Africa national soccer team, where he has played a key role in their FIFA World Cup qualification campaign.
Given that his journey is one of resilience – having nearly quit football a few seasons ago before being helped by Kwanelo Kopo, and rebuilding his career at Pretoria Callies and Polokwane City – Appollis understands what it means to overcome adversity.
Speaking at Pirates’ media open day on Tuesday ahead of the Soweto derby against Kaizer Chiefs at FNB Stadium on Sunday afternoon (3pm kick-off). Appollis reflected on his turnaround.
“I am never looking back at that moment. My job now is to work – whatever happens now is just a step to show that I am working hard,” Appollis said.
“But obviously, it doesn’t stop here. I want to ensure that I continue working hard.”
His work ethic has been central to his rise. When asked whether he expected such a strong start, he responded:
“To be honest, yes. The players that I am surrounded by here are quality, and that helps you grow as a player.”
Appollis’ work rate and chemistry with teammates have not gone unnoticed, with growing calls for him to be considered for PSL Footballer of the Season.
However, the Cape Town-born attacker remains grounded, focusing on helping Pirates end their 14-year league title drought.
“At the moment, our focus is to win games as a group and share the ball as much as we can,” he said.
“The Player of the Season award and others are not on my mind. My job is to score goals for the team and help them.”
Pirates currently sit top of the standings with 58 points, two ahead of second-placed Mamelodi Sundowns, although Sundowns have two games in hand.
Appollis remains unfazed by the situation, stressing the importance of focusing on their own performances.
“Obviously, everyone wants to win the league, but we are going to take it one game at a time. Whatever happens at the end of the season, happens,” he said.
The journey to chasing those remaining 15 points will start against Chiefs at the Calabash on Sunday. This is a game in which Pirates will likely be favourites, given their home ground advantage and 3-0 win in the reverse leg.
Appollis, who'll certainly be one of the players to look out for, has highlighted what they need to do to come out top, especially against an in-form Chiefs team that has recently won five games and drew just one.
“I think it’s the same game – the difference is that it’s a sold-out match, so you need confidence going into it. That’s what we did in the first game,” Appollis explained.
“The second game won’t be easy. It will be very difficult, but we’ve been preparing well at training.”
With form, confidence, and momentum on their side, Appollis remains a key figure in Pirates’ title push – but for him, the mission is clear: team success above all else.
