TS Galaxy have proven to be a bogey side for Kaizer Chiefs over the last five years. They’ll be eager to stop Amakhosi from winning four league games in a row for the first time since April 2023, when the two teams meet at FNB Stadium on Sunday afternoon (3pm kick-off).
Chiefs are currently on a roll, having won their last three Betway Premiership matches to climb to third on the log with 39 points after 21 rounds.
Although still mathematically in the title race, their current position reflects a realistic finish. They trail log leaders Mamelodi Sundowns by 15 points and second-placed Orlando Pirates by 11 points.
A third-place finish would be ideal for Amakhosi, as it would also guarantee a spot in continental football next season via the CAF Confederation Cup – the same competition from which they were eliminated in the group stage this season.
However, they will need to work hard over the last nine matches, starting against Galaxy at the Calabash this weekend.
The Rockets have established a rivalry with Chiefs, beginning when they made history as the first lower-division side to win the Nedbank Cup by beating Chiefs, then regarded as the Cup Kings of South African football, in the 2019 final.
Fast-forward five years: Galaxy purchased the top-flight status of Highlands Park and have continued to be a bogey side for Amakhosi. The two teams last met in a draw at Mbombela Stadium late last year. In 13 games against Galaxy, Chiefs have won one, lost three and drawn nine.
Chiefs cannot afford to let Galaxy stand in their way this Sunday, knowing that any slip-up could jeopardise a continental spot next season.
