Winning has become a standard at Mamelodi Sundowns over the past few seasons, with their dominance rarely coming under sustained threat. However, as this campaign heads into its decisive phase, they find themselves in a far more pressured title race — one that is beginning to test the depth of their experience.

It is not unfamiliar territory for the Brazilians, who have consistently shown their ability to manage expectations and deliver under pressure. But with Orlando Pirates raising their level this season and staying within touching distance, the margin for error has become increasingly slim.

Sundowns have so far handled that pressure well, drawing on a core of seasoned players and a winning culture that has been built over time. The question now is whether that wealth of experience will once again prove decisive, or if this season’s intensified competition will finally push them beyond their comfort zone.

There have already been twists and turns along the way, but despite sitting second on the log, the Brazilians still hold a slight advantage heading into the final stretch. Pirates, in contrast, remain under greater pressure — not only to make up ground but also to hope for dropped points from their rivals.

Under the guidance of Miguel Cardoso, Sundowns have steadied themselves after a period earlier in the season where questions were raised about whether they had lost their edge.

That narrative has since faded, with the team rediscovering rhythm at a crucial time — which in itself raises another debate: have Sundowns dipped, or have Pirates simply closed the gap?

The CAF Champions League remains both an opportunity and a complication. While it offers the lure of continental success, it also places added strain on their domestic ambitions. With the side now looking close to their best, the upcoming international break — followed by the Nedbank Cup — could play a defining role.

Sundowns’ absence from the Nedbank Cup gives them an extended period of rest, which could either sharpen them for the run-in or disrupt their momentum. Currently just a point behind Pirates, the Brazilians still hold a crucial game in hand. With league action set to pause, attention now turns to their next three fixtures and what they could mean for the title race.

Durban City (A)

Durban City FC have exceeded expectations this season, placing themselves firmly in contention for a top-five finish, with an outside chance of pushing into the top three. This encounter presents an opportunity for them to test themselves against the league’s benchmark, particularly on home soil where they have shown resilience. They come into this clash unbeaten in their last four home matches since their defeat to Pirates (2-0) and will be motivated to respond after a 3-1 loss in the reverse fixture.

Polokwane City (A)

On paper, this fixture leans heavily in favour of Sundowns, and recent history suggests a difficult task for Polokwane City FC. However, matches of this nature are rarely straightforward, particularly against a disciplined side likely to sit deep and look to strike on the counter. The Old Peter Mokaba Stadium is not an easy venue to navigate, as Pirates discovered in their narrow 2-1 win there earlier this season. Sundowns will be aware that even a single slip-up at this stage could prove costly in the race for the title.

Stellenbosch FC (H)

Stellenbosch FC have been on an upward trajectory under Gavin Hunt and are edging closer to a top-eight finish. This clash represents one of the toughest tests of his tenure so far. While Stellies have historically proven tricky opponents, recent meetings favour the Brazilians, who have won their last five league encounters. Their strong home form will also provide confidence, having gone unbeaten in five matches since their 1-1 draw with Pirates earlier in the season.

With the title race delicately poised, Sundowns’ ability to navigate this demanding run of fixtures could ultimately determine whether their experience once again carries them to the finish line — or whether this season’s pressure finally shifts the balance.
