Orlando Pirates appear to be showing signs of vulnerability at the worst possible stage of the season, with their lack of clinical finishing threatening to derail their title ambitions. Unless they sharpen up in front of goal, they risk seeing their championship hopes slip away.

Mamelodi Sundowns’ 3-1 victory over Marumo Gallants has handed the defending champions the advantage at the top of the Betway Premiership standings, opening up a two-point lead with both sides having played 21 matches.

While there is still a significant portion of the season remaining — and plenty of potential twists ahead — sloppiness at this stage is simply not an option. It is an area Sundowns have mastered during their recent run, consistently grinding out results even when not at their best.

Titles are often decided by teams capable of grinding out results on off days, something the Buccaneers have struggled to do. Heading into their clash against TS Galaxy this coming Sunday at the Mbombela Stadium (3.30pm kickoff), Abdeslam Ouaddou’s side will be under pressure following another frustrating outing that saw them drop valuable points in their 1-1 draw against Siwelele FC.

They can ill afford further slip-ups, as handing any more ground to Sundowns could prove decisive.

What will concern the Sea Robbers most is that chances are being created, bit not converted. However, attractive football and attacking intent count for little without goals. Ultimately, results are what matter, and they have not been clinical enough despite their promising approach play.

With just nine matches remaining, and needing other results to go their way, the focus must be on what they can control. Improving their finishing will be key, and certain players will need to step up if the Buccaneers are to remain competitive and finish the campaign strongly.

Here are three of Pirates' attackers who need to show up for the Bucs in the final straight of the season.

Yanela Mbuthuma

The former Richards Bay FC striker has made a solid start to the season, registering seven goals and three assists in 23 appearances across all competitions.

However, his total could have been higher given the number of chances he has missed. While his movement and positioning have generally been strong, as the team’s preferred attacking option, his finishing now needs to show greater composure and execution.

Despite limited minutes, often coming off the bench, Makgopa has also struggled to convert the chances that have come his way. As a leading figure in the attack, whether starting or not, he will need to improve his efficiency and be at the right place at the right time.

The difference between the Buccaneers and Sundowns in this title race has largely come down to finishing, and Makgopa must capitalise on the qualities that have made him one of the country’s top strikers.

The talented midfielder has enjoyed a strong season, but there have been moments where his influence has dipped during key periods. With the campaign now at a critical stage, consistency will be vital. Having played a major role in recent seasons, Mofokeng will need to maintain his impact and deliver regularly if the Sea Robbers are to end the season on a high.
