Kaizer Chiefs under fire: Can the Soweto Giants survive a season-defining fixture run?

Pressure is nothing new for Betway Premiership clubs, but for Kaizer Chiefs, it reaches fever pitch. The next few weeks promise to be among the most challenging periods the Soweto giants have faced in recent years.

For once, their underperformance has boiled over. Inconsistency on the pitch, a lack of conviction in play, and mixed results have left fans frustrated, and this time they are openly calling on the club’s management to make decisive changes.

Much of the scrutiny has fallen on the co-coaching duo of Cedric Kaze and Khalil Ben Youssef, with many supporters holding them responsible for the team’s struggles. 

With 12 matches remaining in the season, any managerial adjustments now carry risks. A new appointee would need to hit the ground running—a tall order—but failing to act could allow the campaign to unravel further.

What is clear, though, is that change is needed sooner rather than later. What began the season as a promise of success has quickly shown how swiftly things can deteriorate. 

Here’s a look at Chiefs’ next five fixtures and what each could mean for their season.

Kaizer Chiefs vs Durban City

This will be a stern test against a Durban City side that has shown no fear since their promotion from the lower division. Currently fourth in the Betway Premiership, City have backed up their early-season form and hold a two-point advantage over Chiefs, despite having played two games more. 

With quality and home advantage on their side, Amakhosi need to aim for all three points, with the result likely to have major implications for their season and the top-three race, particularly as Durban City remain in contention.

Kaizer Chiefs vs Magesi FC

Both clubs are looking to salvage their campaigns. Chiefs face a Magesi side struggling to stay afloat, teetering on the brink of relegation and in desperate need of a miracle to secure top-flight survival. 

Having battled similar situations last season, this season, their confidence is low, making this an ideal chance for Chiefs to regain momentum and claim vital points.

Orbit College vs Kaizer Chiefs

Amakhosi will face another relegation-threatened side in Orbit College. Memories of their 4-1 triumph over Pogiso Makhoye’s team in November may provide confidence, but on match day, nothing can be taken for granted. 

With the clash at the Royal Bafokeng Stadium a venue used for the 2010 Fifa World Cup, Chiefs will need to remain sharp, as Orbit have shown a fearless streak this season and will seize any opportunities presented on the day.

Kaizer Chiefs vs TS Galaxy

This fixture promises to be the toughest of Chiefs’ upcoming run. Recent encounters between the two sides have been tightly contested, with only one win in their last eight league meetings; the rest have ended in draws. 

Galaxy, winners of the last duel in 2023, remain formidable opponents. This match will demand focus and discipline from the Glamour Boys, as again they cannot afford to slip up against a potential midfield team they are directly in competition with for places.

Magesi FC vs Kaizer Chiefs

The return clash against Dikwena Tsa Meetse will offer Amakhosi another pivotal moment in their season. While Seshego Stadium might have lent Magesi an edge, the shift to New Peter Mokaba Stadium tilts the scales back in favor of the Soweto giants. 

Buoyed by strong support and superior quality, Chiefs will enter the match with quiet confidence, knowing the final outcome will be determined by their performance on the day, and this will be another fixture where they will aim to secure maximum points.
