When the Betway Premiership returns to action after the Nedbank Cup break, all eyes will be on the league’s most formidable teams, Mamelodi Sundowns and Orlando Pirates.

Their midweek matches will intensify the fierce title race, with both clubs facing critical fixtures that could shape the championship’s trajectory. Sundowns will face Orbit College FC on Tuesday, a match moved up from its original date on Saturday. Additionally, the fixture moved from the Royal Bafokeng Sports Palace to the expansive 32 000-seater Olympia Stadium in Rustenburg.

Frustration has arisen for Sundowns head coach Miguel Cardoso, who expressed his discontent after the two parties ignored his plea for a postponement. Cardoso requested a delay to allow the squad sufficient recovery time ahead of a crucial CAF Champions League clash against Mali’s Stade Malien, scheduled just three days later at Loftus Versfeld.

His appeal was met with silence from both the PSL and Orbit College FC, further complicating the club’s preparations.

“It’s unfair that other teams, especially Pirates, received postponements for their CAF competition qualifiers, while we were not given the same consideration,” Cardoso stated.

With such a tight schedule, the coach may need to rotate his squad to stay competitive against Stade Malien. However, previous attempts at heavy squad rotation have cost Sundowns dearly this season, adding further pressure ahead of Tuesday’s clash. Orbit College are currently in 15th place in the 16-team league.

Meanwhile, Orlando Pirates will take to the pitch on Wednesday when they host Richards Bay at the Orlando Amstel Arena in Soweto. As log-leaders, Pirates are equally motivated to maintain their formidable form as the league heads into its final stretch.

The current standings reveal a nail-biting scenario: both Pirates and Sundowns are neck-and-neck with 44 points, separated by a slim margin in goal difference, promising a dramatic and thrilling season finale.

Over the weekend, the Premiership programme features seven matches, with the spotlight firmly placed on the headline clash between Kaizer Chiefs and Durban City at FNB Stadium. This clash promises to add another layer of excitement to an already intense battle for Chiefs, who are slipping down the league ladder and in danger of losing out on a season-ending Top 8 berth.

The weekend fixtures also afford the Sea Robbers an opportunity to build pressure on their rivals. Victory over the Rich Boyz will help keep them in the Top 2. Another win against Siwelele a few days later, in the absence of Downs, could open up a bit of breathing room for coach Abdeslam Ouaddou and Co.

With the Fifa international break at the end of March fast approaching, there will be precious few opportunities for Sundowns and Pirates to cement their place as the would-be champions of South Africa. Collecting as may points over the next fortnight for both sides, could be the momentum required to make a run to the final line at the end of May.
