Coach Abdeslam Ouaddou has urged Orlando Pirates to concentrate fully on their upcoming match against lower-tier team Casric Stars on Saturday.
The stakes are undeniably high in this Nedbank Cup showdown in Orlando, especially with the looming showdown against arch-rivals Kaizer Chiefs just a week away.
Ouaddou, who is eager to guide the Buccaneers deep into cup competition, acknowledged the importance of not taking their opponents lightly.
Despite Casric Stars playing in the First Division and currently sitting in fourth or fifth place in the league table, the coach highlighted the competitive nature that defines cup tournaments.
"We know that Casric Stars is a very competitive team, playing in the (First Division) championship. They have demonstrated their capabilities this season, scoring 20 goals while only conceding 15," Ouaddou pointed out.
His emphasis on the formidable qualities of their opponents serves as a crucial reminder that in cup competitions, complacency can lead to unexpected outcomes.
"There are no more small teams, especially in the cups," he asserted firmly. The subtle warning about the potential challenges posed by so-called lesser teams resonates with the pedigree of past cup upsets in football history.
While the Pirates will enjoy home advantage at their revered Orlando base, Ouaddou stressed the need for the players to adopt a rigorous, serious mindset as they prepare for the match.
The team held two training sessions on Thursday morning — one tailored for players who featured against Mamelodi Sundowns and another for those who did not.
"It is essential for us to take this game seriously. A so-called small team can challenge you if you don't put in the effort or the commitment and seriousness," Ouaddou reiterated, strongly marking the approach the team must take against Casric Stars.
