Kaizer Chiefs have run out of safety nets.

Bundled out of continental football in the CAF Confederation Cup and eliminated from the Nedbank Cup two weeks ago, the Amakhosi are now staring at a stark reality — the Betway Premiership is their only remaining route to silverware.

With the pressure mounting and the margins tightening, Chiefs will need more than structure and intent. They need decisive individuals to rise when it matters most. Here are five players who must step up if Chiefs are to sustain a genuine league title push.

Brandon Petersen | The margin between points and regrets

Goalkeepers often decide league races quietly.

Brandon Petersen has been entrusted with the No 1 jersey this season, making over a dozen league appearances. While he has delivered solid performances, Chiefs now require match-winning interventions.

Clean sheets, command of the penalty area and error-free distribution are no longer luxuries — they are necessities. In a title race where one mistake can cost three points, Petersen must become a source of calm and certainty behind a defence that has shown vulnerability under pressure.

Aden McCarthy | From promise to authority

Aden McCarthy is still early in his senior career, but circumstances have forced him into a leading role sooner than expected. The young defender has featured regularly in league football and shown composure beyond his years.

Now, consistency must follow. Chiefs need McCarthy to dominate his defensive duties — winning duels, maintaining concentration and organising those around him.

League titles are built on defenders who make the extraordinary look routine. If McCarthy continues to grow into the role, Chiefs gain stability. If he falters, the cracks widen quickly.

Mduduzi Shabalala | Pressure defining a career moment

At just 22-years old, Mduduzi Shabalala is already carrying the weight of expectation at one of the country’s biggest clubs.

Shabalala has delivered goals and assists this season, but recent performances have come under scrutiny as Chiefs struggle to break down stubborn opponents. This is the phase that separates talented prospects from decisive match-winners.

Chiefs need Shabalala to demand the ball, embrace responsibility and produce moments that shift matches — not once in a while, but repeatedly. The pressure is real, but so is the opportunity.

Flávio Silva | The striker who must decide games

Flavio Silva is slowly building his reputation for Kaizer Chiefs.

Flávio Silva leads the team’s scoring charts, but in a title race, numbers are judged differently. Four or five goals are not enough if they are spread thinly.

Chiefs need Silva to deliver when the stakes are highest — tight away fixtures, late chances, moments when the crowd grows anxious. Movement and work rate are appreciated, but goals define legacies.

If Silva starts converting half-chances into winners, Chiefs stay alive.

Glody Lilepo | Turning threat into outcomes

Makabi Lilepo offers pace, width and unpredictability, yet too often the final product has gone missing. In a league where Chiefs frequently face deep defensive blocks, wide players become crucial.

Lilepo must consistently beat his marker, deliver quality balls into the box and add goals to his game. Stretching opponents is one thing — punishing them is another.

The cups are gone. The excuses are gone. If Chiefs are to transform a bruising season into a successful one, these five players must step up immediately.
