Former Orlando Pirates star Sifiso Myeni believes the demands of competing on multiple fronts will ultimately derail Kaizer Chiefs’ title challenge this season.
Amakhosi currently sit third in the Betway Premiership, five points behind leaders Orlando Pirates and two adrift of reigning champions Mamelodi Sundowns in second place. Their recent upturn in form has seen several pundits tip Chiefs as genuine contenders, but Myeni remains unconvinced.
“Kaizer Chiefs should just try to keep this current form,” Myeni said on the Omniaudioafrica podcast. “It is going to be a busy month of February. This month is going to be jam-packed. It is where men and the boys will be separated during February. This will apply to all of the teams.”
According to the former winger, the tight schedule will soon stretch squads and expose weaknesses across the league. “Right now, the points gap between the teams is small, soon the gaps will increase,” he said. “Teams will start to realise they need three or four games to catch up.”
While acknowledging Chiefs’ improved performances, Myeni questioned whether the squad has the depth required to sustain a title push under pressure. “Right now, yes, Chiefs are in good form. I am not too sure if they have the squad depth. To be honest, I am not so sure. I don’t think they have the squad depth,” he said.
Chiefs’ workload has already come under sharper focus following their Nedbank Cup exit on Wednesday night, a result that has intensified scrutiny on the squad. Amakhosi now remain active in both the Betway Premiership and the CAF Confederation Cup, a combination Myeni believes will further test their resilience.
“For me, not yet. On this side, they are playing in the CAF Confederation Cup, and then there is the Betway Premiership,” Myeni said, having earlier highlighted the additional strain of cup commitments before Chiefs’ elimination.
Despite their strong run of results, Myeni feels the Soweto giants are yet to be truly tested. “In my opinion, they have not been tested yet. They just don’t have it in them to win the league. They have many problems,” he said.
He also pointed to last season’s struggles as a warning sign for the current campaign, suggesting that sustained pressure could quickly unravel Chiefs’ momentum. “From all the problems they had last season, and suddenly you want to challenge this season? No ways. You will see, they will crack easily,” Myeni said. “They are saying Amakhosi ajabulile now, but soon they will want the coaches gone.”
