Gomora United will arrive at Loftus Versfeld Stadium on Wednesday evening without fear for their Nedbank Cup last-32 encounter against hosts PSL heavyweights Mamelodi Sundowns.

Ashley Makhanya, Gomora’s coach and a former Bafana Bafana and Bidvest Wits defender, has articulated a bold vision for his team. “This is the Nedbank Cup, a tournament famously known for its underdog success stories,” said Makhanya, reaffirming the belief that anything is possible in knockout football.

It is brave talk from Makhanya, considering Gomora find themselves sitting twelfth in the Motsepe Foundation Championship, precariously just five points above the relegation zone. A recent goalless draw against Venda Football Club reflects the erratic nature of their league form.

However, Makhanya asserts that despite league survival being a priority, his side’s ambitions run deeper than this prestigious cup competition.

“Of course, the priority is to stay in the league and do well, but we cannot approach the Nedbank Cup lightly,” Makhanya emphasised, highlighting his team’s need to adopt a fearless mentality. This strategic approach reflects their intent not merely to compete but to strike fear into the hearts of their seasoned opponents.

With a confidence that reverberates throughout his squad, Makhanya declared, “What’s the worst that can happen? They (Sundowns) are beating everybody, but we have no fear. We will go out there and do our best.”

Such sentiments reflect the essence of the Nedbank Cup: a battleground where unexpected victories can reshape narratives.

Makhanya recognised the challenge they face against a team with an impressive track record in cup competitions.

“We know what Sundowns are capable of and what they have been doing for so many years,” he acknowledged. Yet he encourages his players to reciprocate the challenge with self-expression and confidence on the field.

“We will put our plan in motion, and whatever happens will happen. But we are not going there with fear,” Makhanya insisted.

This fearless attitude not only propels Gomora into the match with fighting spirit but could also prove crucial in surprising the mighty Sundowns.

Makhanya’s strategy centres on leveraging the unpredictable nature of the Nedbank Cup, a tournament known for producing shock results and thrilling narratives.

In the lead-up to this historic encounter, one theme is clear: Gomora are ready to embrace the spotlight and aim high, hoping to leave their mark in a competition that celebrates the unexpected triumphs of underdogs.
