Golden Arrows may start Tuesday night’s Betway Premiership clash against Kaizer Chiefs at FNB Stadium as underdogs, but recent history suggests this is a fixture primed for an upset.
With league action resuming after the Africa Cup of Nations, which finished up this past Sunday with Senegal as champions, Arrows have shown they can trouble Chiefs when least expected. Manqoba Mngqithi’s side will back their defensive organisation, discipline, and ability to strike at key moments to derail one of the league's in-form teams.
Sitting in 10th place on the PSL table with 16 points from 14 matches, Arrows are firmly in the fight for a top-eight finish.
While their recent form has been mixed, with four defeats in their last five league games, Mngqithi has been praised for getting the best out of his squad in tricky fixtures.
The head-to-head history between these rivals also gives the Arrows mentor plenty of cause for optimism. In their last five PSL meetings, Arrows have registered notable victories – including a 2-1 win in March last year – showing they can match Chiefs on their day.
The reverse fixture in August saw Chiefs edge Arrows 1-0 at Moses Mabhida Stadium in Durban, a Flavio Silva goal the difference between the sides. Both teams will be eager to assert their dominance in this second-round clash at FNB Stadium (7.30pm kick-off).
From Arrows’ perspective, gaining momentum and restoring confidence will be crucial after the international break. Chiefs enter the game unbeaten in their last five league matches and sit fourth in the standings, making them a tough test. However, the visitors from KwaZulu-Natal know they can compete with anyone on their day.
For Mngqithi and his players, this match isn’t just another league game – it’s an opportunity to kickstart the second half of the season, boost confidence, and make a meaningful push for that top-eight spot as they look to defy the league form guide and upset one of South Africa’s traditional giants.
