Stellenbosch FC is entering a new chapter following the announcement that Steve Barker has stepped down as head coach with immediate effect.

Barker will join Tanzanian Premier League giants Simba SC. After nearly nine years with the club, Barker’s decision marks a significant moment in Stellenbosch’s evolving narrative in South African football.

Barker first joined Stellenbosch as an assistant coach during the club’s inaugural season. He was promoted to Head Coach in July 2017 and played a pivotal role in transforming the team into a noteworthy contender in the local football landscape.

His tenure has been nothing short of impressive; he led the club through 309 matches across all competitions, guiding them to win the National First Division title in the 2018-19 season and achieve promotion to the Premier League.

In a landmark achievement, Barker also steered Stellenbosch to victory in the revamped Carling Knockout in 2023, making the club its first recipient. His strategic acumen led to back-to-back MTN8 finals in 2024 and 2025, as well as consecutive CAF Confederation Cup qualifications.

Reflecting on his departure, Barker expressed mixed emotions, highlighting the bittersweet nature of his decision.

“It is a bittersweet decision, but I feel the time is right for Stellenbosch to enter a new era with someone else at the helm, and I can only wish the Club continued success in the future,” he shared.

He emphasised the need to pursue new challenges for his personal growth and coaching aspirations, acknowledging Stellenbosch’s role in preparing him for this next step.

Stellenbosch FC’s CEO, Rob Benadie, praised Barker for his significant contributions over the years. “Steve’s achievements on the field speak for themselves, but his influence has been just as important in helping shape the culture, identity, and professional standards that have become synonymous with Stellenbosch FC in recent years,” Benadie stated.

He emphasised Barker’s remarkable loyalty and commitment, noting that his foundational work would help ensure the club’s future stability and continuity.

Barker leaves a legacy firmly embedded in Stellenbosch’s history as he transitions to arguably one of Africa’s biggest clubs. His parting words resonated with warmth and gratitude as he acknowledged the support of management, staff, and players, who echoed his appreciation.

As Stellenbosch prepares for this significant shift, optimism surrounds the club’s future trajectory, with the belief that the structures and philosophy developed under Barker’s guidance will serve them well in the next phase of their journey.
