Kaizer Chiefs’ first half of the season has been marked by a mix of encouraging moments and familiar frustrations, yet the chance to finish the calendar year on a high remains.

However, they will face a stern test against TS Galaxy when the two sides meet in the Betway Premiership today at Mbombela Stadium (3.30 pm kickoff).

Currently fifth in the standings, the Glamour Boys have struggled with inconsistency. Despite their efforts to punch above their weight and challenge the league’s top teams, they now need to find firmer footing if their title aspirations are to be realised. Ending the year on a strong note could provide the reset and momentum required ahead of the resumption of the season in January.

Amakhosi’s recent goalless draw against Chippa United — their fifth of the campaign — was another frustrating result, particularly given that they were expected to overcome a struggling Chippa side, who will be fighting to secure every point in their battle against relegation.

The forthcoming clash with Galaxy promises to be a tougher challenge for the Soweto giants. Unlike the Chilli Boys, the Rockets have found better rhythm this season and go into the game hoping to consolidate a top-six position before the international break while maintaining their momentum.

Midfielder Asanele Velebayi has been making strides into the playing side in recent matches since his controversial move from Cape Town Spurs at the end of last season, and he expects his side to bounce back strongly following their disappointing result against Chippa.

“A bit disappointed about the result, I felt like we should have come out with the maximum points, but I was proud of the effort we gave,” Velebayi said ahead of the clash.

“Dropping points always drives you to push for maximum points in the next game; you never want to drop points, so the next game becomes important.

“I have been watching TS Galaxy closely, and I think they are in pretty decent form, so going into that game will be tough and intense, and we will be looking to go all out.

“It will need the right mindset from everyone that will be playing; they are in good form, and we will not take them lightly, and we are aware that it will be a difficult game.”

With the tough challenge that comes with playing for such a huge club like Chiefs, the 22-year-old is so far enjoying the experience, and he has taken to the challenge with an eye to gain more experience with the hope of contributing to his side’s improvement.

“Being a new player at Chiefs is learning every day because the club is a big brand. I am taking it game by game; my confidence is slowly building compared to when I made my debut and I was a bit nervous.

“The more I get the minutes, the more I get confident; I am adapting very well to the club.”

With the season set to go on a break of over a month for the Africa Cup of Nations, Amakhosi will be counting on Velebayi to provide the edge in their quest to finish the year on a strong note.
