Former Kaizer Chiefs star Isaac Mabotsa has urged the club to appoint a new head coach, as he did not believe co-coaches Cedric Kaze and Khalil Ben Youssef were up to the task of turning things around.
Kaze and Youssef were promoted to the positions of co-coaches following Nasreddine Nabi’s departure earlier in the season and have guided the club to fifth in the Betway Premiership, although they could move up to third if they win Sunday afternoon’s game against TS Galaxy.
According to Mabotsa, the club’s recent run of form, where they are winless in three games in all competitions, is proof that the duo are not good enough to do the job.
“As coaches, it's good they received a chance. It shows the club saw potential. They started well, but now they're struggling. That's just my opinion,” Mabotsa, a former Kaizer Chiefs full-back, was quoted by KickOff.
“I hope the Kaizer Chiefs management is currently searching for a new head coach. For example, they need a high-profile coach, like Pitso Mosimane — I'm just giving an example. We need someone who can elevate these players to a higher level because, right now, it's not working. We need a high-profile coach,” he continued.
“For instance, every new signing, like Velebayi right now, starts with great enthusiasm. Yet, as time passes, his teammates tend to bring him down to their level. That's why I say we need someone strict with the young players. They begin well but tend to relax over time.”
Mabotsa’s comments underscore the urgency for Kaizer Chiefs to make a decisive move in their coaching setup. With the season reaching a critical stage, the club faces a choice between giving the co-coaches more time or bringing in a high-profile figure capable of galvanising the squad and steering them back to title contention.
Fans will be watching closely, hoping for a solution that can reignite the team’s ambitions.
