Marumo Gallants are riding the wave of their thrilling Nedbank Cup run, and head coach Abdeslam Ouaddou is hoping that the magic from the competition can spark some much-needed fire in their battle for survival in the Betway Premiership.
The Free State-based side will take to the pitch on Wednesday at Dr. Molemela Stadium, facing off against Sekhukhune United at 7.30pm.
Ouaddou, now at the helm of Gallants, is a fresh face in the dugout after replacing Dan Malesela, who was shown the door following the team’s inconsistent run of form. Since taking charge, the Moroccan-French coach has overseen four matches — two wins, one draw, and one loss.
Despite the setbacks along the way, there is a sense of hope in the Gallants’ camp. Sitting 14th on the table with 19 points from 20 matches, Gallants are dangerously close to the relegation zone. Bahlabane Ba Ntwa are just two points behind Magesi, who currently occupy the play-off spot.
However, they have already booked their place in the Nedbank Cup semifinals, thanks to a penalty shootout win over Durban City FC this past weekend. It is a cup run that has given them a glimpse of glory, and now, Ouaddou is hoping they can channel that momentum into their league survival quest.
The 46-year-old coach also acknowledged the grueling nature of the football calendar, highlighting the lack of time for training before this encounter. He emphasised that player welfare should always be a priority.
“We must not forget that the players are the ones who make the show. If our players are tired and cannot give their best on the pitch, football will no longer be entertaining,” he said.
“It’s very important because we play every three days, and we are not robots. The players are not robots. To run and give their best, they need a little bit of rest.”
In the visiting dugout will be a fresh-faced Eric Tinkler, who was recently announced as the head coach of Babina Noko. He will be eager to make an impression in his first match in charge.
