Fresh off lifting silverware in Scotland, Linda Motlhalo will look to channel that winning feeling into Banyana Banyana’s international friendly against Algeria at Princess Magogo Stadium on Tuesday.

The midfielder returns to camp at a crucial moment for the national side, who are seeking to reset after a frustrating showing at the Cosafa Women’s Championship on home soil. Despite creating chances and controlling matches, Banyana were unable to convert their performances into silverware, a shortcoming that has lingered in the build-up to these friendlies.

For Motlhalo, however, the timing of her recent Sky Sports Cup triumph with Glasgow City could prove significant. Having experienced the demands of knockout football and the composure required in decisive moments, she offers a valuable reference point for a squad looking to rediscover its cutting edge.

“It feels really good to come into camp after winning a cup,” Motlhalo said. “I just want to bring that momentum into these games.”

Her role in the side extends beyond creativity. As one of Banyana’s primary playmakers, Motlhalo is tasked with linking midfield and attack, an area that has come under scrutiny after the team’s recent struggles in the final third. Yet the 26-year-old is quick to emphasise that the solution will not rest on individuals alone.

“As much as we have creative players, it’s a team effort,” she explained. “The understanding between us is what helps us going forward – knowing each other’s movements and making the right decisions.”

Those connections will be under the spotlight against an Algerian side expected to offer a more tactical and possession-based challenge. It is precisely the kind of test Banyana need as they fine-tune their approach ahead of the delayed Women's Africa Cup of Nations later this year.

With players having spent time apart due to club commitments, Tuesday’s encounter also presents an opportunity to rebuild rhythm and cohesion within the squad. It will be followed by Friday's clash against the same opposition at the King Zwilithini Stadium. Both matches kick off at 3pm.

“These games are important for us to see where we are,” Motlhalo said. “We get to improve our understanding again as players and with the coaches.”

As Banyana look to move on from recent disappointment, Motlhalo’s winning touch could offer the spark they need – not just against Algeria, but in the bigger challenges that lie ahead.
