The Banyana Banyana squad is nearly at full strength following the recent arrival of six players as they gear up for the COSAFA Women’s Championship semi-finals in Polokwane, Limpopo.
The team, which has demonstrated resilience and skill as the reigning African champions, now includes Mexico-based stars Thembi Kgatlana and Amogelang Motau, midfielder Linda Motlhalo (Scotland), Bongeka Gamede (Denmark), Jessica Wade (Finland), and Lebo Ramalepe (Mamelodi Sundowns). Each is expected to add substantial experience to the group.
Despite the excitement surrounding their arrival, these players are not eligible to participate in the ongoing COSAFA regional tournament. Nevertheless, the coaching staff is eager to integrate them into training routines as they prepare for the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON).
Coach Desiree Ellis expressed her enthusiasm, stating: “We are excited to have these players in camp as they bring more experience. I believe this is an exciting time for the youngsters in the squad as they get to mix with their heroes.”
This training camp serves a dual purpose: aligning strategies for both the COSAFA Championship and WAFCON while enhancing the squad’s depth. Ellis highlighted the recent form of her players, noting that Kgatlana, Motau, and Motlhalo all scored in their last appearances for their respective clubs.
One key player still to arrive is Hildah Magaia, who recently signed for Spanish side Deportivo de La Coruña. Her arrival has been slightly delayed due to documentation issues.
“We are working together with the club to see what’s best for them, for Hildah, and for Sasol Banyana Banyana, but she will be joining us soon,” Ellis confirmed.
Banyana Banyana will face Zimbabwe in the COSAFA semi-final on Friday at 3pm at the New Peter Mokaba Stadium. The winners will advance to Sunday’s final to meet either Namibia or Zambia. Ellis is expected to announce the final WAFCON 2026 squad over the coming days once the regional tournament concludes.
