Banyana Banyana showcased their dominance at the COSAFA Women’s Championship with a convincing 2-0 victory over Angola at Seshego Stadium on Saturday afternoon.
This win marks their second consecutive triumph, bringing them closer to securing a spot in the tournament’s knockout phase.
The first goal came courtesy of Gabriela Salgado, who found the net in the 12th minute, marking a triumphant return to the national team after a lengthy injury absence.
Coach Desiree Ellis made a total of nine changes from the previous Group A match against Malawi, with Salgado among the standout players, alongside Isabella Ludwig and Regina Mogolola, who retained their positions from the earlier game.
After falling behind early, Angola adopted a resolute defensive strategy, effectively limiting Banyana Banyana’s chances as they fought for a foothold in the match.
Banyana appeared poised to extend their lead when Bonolo Mokoma and Sibongakonke Mzobe combined effectively in a counterattack. Still, Mzobe’s effort went astray as she missed a golden opportunity inside the box.
As the clock ticked down, Banyana Banyana continued their pursuit of a second goal, with Sibulele Holweni’s corner kick catalysing their success in the dying minutes.
Following a deflection, substitute Nonhlanhla Mthandi pounced on the loose ball, firing home to secure the win at 2-0, much to the delight of the home crowd.
The victory places Banyana Banyana at the top of Group A with an impressive six points after two matches, all but ensuring their place in the semi-finals. The winners of each of the three groups, along with the best runner-up, will advance, and Banyana seems well on track for the final stage of the competition.
With Banyana Banyana’s sights firmly set on the knockout stage, Banyana Banyana’s performance continues to instil hope among fans for a successful tournament run.
