As South Africa prepares for two pivotal warm-up matches ahead of the 2026 Fifa World Cup, the decision to exclude Orlando Pirates goalkeeper Sipho Chaine from the Bafana Bafana squad has sparked intense debate among fans and analysts alike.

At 29, Chaine has had an outstanding domestic season, amassing an impressive 13 clean sheets in the Premiership. Yet, national coach Hugo Broos has opted to overlook his talents for these crucial international friendlies.

This development raises several important questions surrounding coach Broos’ latest squad selections, one of five key talking points worth exploring.

Chaine reaction

Sipho Chaine’s exclusion from the squad has drawn attention from fans, especially given his strong domestic form this season. The 29-year-old Orlando Pirates goalkeeper has distinguished himself in the Premiership with 13 clean sheets, yet he has been entirely omitted from the selection.

While Coach Broos did not explicitly clarify the reasons for Chaine’s absence, he hinted that off-field issues stemming from the most recent Africa Cup of Nations contributed to certain player exclusions.

Rayners’ riddle

Striker Iqraam Rayners has been in good form, but Broos overlooked him, perhaps for medical reasons. Rayners was released from the Bafana camp in late October due to a medical condition, reportedly a cardiac scare.

Following his absence from the final 2026 Fifa World Cup qualifiers, he did not participate in training with Sundowns for a period of two weeks. Upon his return, Rayners received clearance from the medical team to resume both training and competitive play.

Coach Miguel Cardoso confirmed that the issue was deemed minor, allowing for his swift reintegration into the team.

Master Chef is not cooking

Broos previously held considerable expectations for Orlando Pirates midfielder Sipho Mbule, believing he could serve as a suitable successor to the veteran Themba Zwane. Broos recognised the significant contribution the attacking midfielder made to securing the national team’s qualification for the 2026 World Cup.

However, Mbule’s recent lack of playing time has adversely affected his prospects of selection for the Bafana Bafana squad.

Bongo’s drum beats louder

Bongokuhle Hlongwane’s exclusion from Bafana Bafana squads has been a significant point of controversy in the past. Broos often questioned the quality of play in Major League Soccer (MLS) in the USA.

Broos mentioned that Hlongwane had previously failed to impress when given opportunities. However, Hlongwane has been in good form in recent weeks, which led Broos to have a change of heart. This time, he’s likely to prove himself.

Leaner but meaner

The inclusion of Sekhukhune United goalkeeper Renaldo Leaner in the latest Bafana Bafana squad is a reward for his confidence — he always felt he should be in the national squad.

Having made his debut in June 2025 with two appearances in friendly matches against Tanzania and Mozambique, Leaner is under consideration by Broos for further evaluation ahead of the World Cup squad announcement scheduled for May.

He’ll likely enjoy a hit-out against Panama.
