Mamelodi Sundowns midfielder Jayden Adams has earned a recall to the Bafana Bafana squad following his impressive form, as the national team prepares for upcoming international friendlies against Panama later this month.

With the 2026 Fifa World Cup approaching, the 23-man squad has a valuable opportunity to impress, with limited time left to secure places in the final team. The fixtures against a strong Panama side are expected to provide a significant test for players looking to cement their spots.

Adams returns to the fold after missing out on the recent Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), having previously struggled for form and game time at Sundowns. He is joined by club captain Themba Zwane, who also returns after missing the AFCON due to injury.

Minnesota United forward Bongokuhle Hlongwane has also been included, while Orlando Pirates goalkeeper Sipho Chaine is among the notable omissions. Sundowns striker Iqraam Rayners has once again been left out despite his recent impressive performances.

Bafana Bafana head coach Hugo Broos welcomed Adams’ return, highlighting his growth and importance to the team.

“Very happy that he is back, he plays very well and makes a great combination with Teboho (Mokoena),"Broos said after the squad announcement on SABC Sport.

“He is a talented and good player, he was good when playing for Stellenbosch FC and he is better now because he is playing Champions League games with more pressure because when you don’t do well at Sundowns there are five or six players waiting to take your place and its good for him."

On the omission of Chaine, Broos said he wants to take a closer look at Sekhukhune United goalkeeper Renaldo Leaner, who will be alongside Ronwen Williams and Ricardo Goss. Broos, however, is not ruling out Chaine’s return.

“Leaner has been with us at other camps but I want to see him during the camp because its not only about on the pitch but also outside the pitch, but everyone should be on their toes for their place in the team.”

Broos also explained the decision to face Panama, with future opposition in mind.

“We were looking for an opponent from North America because we will be playing against Mexico.

“Panama came and I saw where they were ranked and its a good opponent that is ranked number 33 in the world and it will be two tough friendlies for us.”
