Mamelodi Sundowns will arrive in Bamako full of confidence after beating hosts Stade Malien 3-0 in the CAF Champions League quarter-final first leg in Pretoria a week ago, putting them on course to reach the semi-finals for the third consecutive season.
However, coach Miguel Cardoso has urged his players to keep their feet on the ground and continue striving for strong results that will guide them safely into the semi-finals.
With the team riding high both continentally and domestically – retaining top spot in the Betway Premiership, two points ahead of second-placed Orlando Pirates after 21 matches – here’s why Cardoso is still likely to adopt an aggressive approach in Mali.
Sending a stern warning to rivals
After thrashing Stade Malien in the first leg, Sundowns already have one foot in the semi-finals. However, as Cardoso emphasised, complacency could prove costly.
If they progress, Sundowns will face either Esperance or Al Ahly – two familiar continental rivals. Esperance, previously coached by Cardoso, eliminated Sundowns in the semi-finals three seasons ago, while Sundowns beat Al Ahly at the same stage last season en route to the final.
With the prospect of renewing either rivalry, it is crucial for Sundowns to assert themselves as favourites. A dominant performance in Bamako would further strengthen their credentials.
Stade Malien coach Mauril Njoya vowed in Pretoria that his side would overturn the deficit at home. Sundowns should treat that as motivation to deliver a commanding performance and send a strong message across the continent.
Building momentum ahead of the Fifa break
Sundowns are set to contribute several players to their respective national teams, including seven to Bafana Bafana – more than any other club, with Orlando Pirates contributing one fewer player.
Given their strong form, Sundowns players are expected to play a key role for Bafana in upcoming international friendlies against Panama at Moses Mabhida Stadium and DHL Stadium on March 27 and 31, respectively.
Coach Hugo Broos will be encouraged by the prospect of having in-form Sundowns players, especially if they secure another convincing result in Bamako to seal their semi-final place.
Among those called up is Themba Zwane, who will be eager to report to national camp in high spirits and strengthen his case for inclusion in the final World Cup squad.
A defining season for Cardoso in Africa
Cardoso has a clear mandate this season: win the CAF Champions League. Failure to do so would not only reflect poorly on his tenure but also dent his continental reputation after back-to-back runner-up finishes in the past two seasons.
Despite facing criticism from disgruntled supporters, club legends, and former players during difficult periods, the Portuguese coach has remained resilient.
Now is the time for him to deliver, silence his critics, and ensure his team capitalises on their strong position. In recent media briefings, Cardoso stirred debate by sharing his views on South African football, suggesting that some individuals wanted to see Sundowns fail.
That context adds further urgency for Sundowns to maintain their momentum and avoid giving critics any satisfaction. Instead, they must push themselves to the limit to achieve continental success.
