Kaizer Chiefs coach Cedric Kaze has credited improved stability for his side’s resurgence after they responded to a damaging slump with back-to-back league victories.
Amakhosi eased past Magesi FC at the Moses Mabhida Stadium on Saturday, a result that lifted them into fourth place on the Betway Premiership standings. Crucially, the 2-0 win confirmed a shift in momentum for Chiefs, who had come into this run on the back of four consecutive defeats across all competitions — an unwanted record in the club’s history.
Those back-to-back victories have now halted the slide and injected renewed belief into a squad that had come under intense scrutiny. Goals from Wandile Duba and Mfundo Vilakazi ensured a controlled performance against Magesi, with Chiefs showing greater balance and composure throughout.
Kaze believes the turnaround is rooted in improved continuity within the squad after a period disrupted by injuries and suspensions.
“I always believed that the difficult moment we went through was conditioned by a lot of injuries and suspensions,” Kaze said. “When you have important players that are playing regularly two, three or four games in a row, that gives the stability we’re looking for.”
For the Chiefs coach, the key during that difficult period was maintaining calm rather than reacting emotionally to results.
“We knew why we were in the difficult moment and the important thing was that we stayed calm,” he explained. “We need to keep that temperament and work every day to keep the momentum.”
The match also marked a significant moment for Duba, who opened his account for the season after 11 appearances.
Kaze offered strong backing for the 21-year-old, highlighting both his contribution and long-term importance to the team.
“It’s a very good performance from him today, we want players that will challenge for each position,” he said. “He’s a very important player, one that has shown his quality since last season.”
The coach acknowledged the challenges young players face in maintaining consistency but expressed confidence in Duba’s progression.
“Sometimes players tend to sleep on what they’ve done and not continue to improve,” Kaze added. “But I believe he’s coming back now.”
Kaze also revealed the tactical reasoning behind deploying Duba in a wider role to maximise his impact.
“That’s why we played him out wide as well because we feel if he comes from wider and into the box, he has more space to finish,” he said. “He’s also fast, so from that position he can make more of an impact.”
With momentum now shifting in their favour, Chiefs have given themselves a platform to push for a strong finish — a turnaround that seemed unlikely just weeks ago. The upcoming international break will also afford the technical team an opportunity to fine tune their plans for the rest of the season with the CAF race expected to intensify.
Chiefs will next enter the field on the sixth of next month against Orbit College in Rustenberg.
