Kaizer Chiefs’ preparations for the Soweto Derby were dealt a significant blow before kick-off, a reality that became clearer after their 3–0 league defeat to Orlando Pirates on Saturday.

Speaking after the match, Chiefs co-head coach Cedric Kaze explained the high-profile absences of Brandon Petersen, Mfundo Vilakazi and Mduduzi Shabalala, revealing a combination of medical, injury-related and technical factors. Petersen’s omission was the major talking point ahead of the fixture, with Bruce Bvuma making his first appearance of the season in one of the most demanding matches on the domestic calendar.

The Chiefs captain and first-choice goalkeeper had been expected to start, making his absence all the more surprising. Kaze confirmed that Petersen’s withdrawal was sudden and unavoidable, revealing the goalkeeper had been hospitalised and underwent surgery on the eve of the derby.

“Brandon has been sick the last two days, he got rushed into hospital and had a successful surgery yesterday,” Kaze said, without disclosing further details.

The coach acknowledged the impact of losing such an influential figure so close to kick-off, particularly given Petersen’s leadership and experience in big matches.

“It’s a very big loss the day before a derby like this to lose our captain, your goalkeeper,” he added.

“I think Bruce had a good game, and I believe that he made some good saves. It was his first game of course, but I think that he should’ve been helped more.”

Vilakazi’s absence was also confirmed to be injury-related. The midfielder picked up a knock during Chiefs’ midweek loss to Stellenbosch and was reassessed before the derby.

“Mfundo was injured in the game against Stellenbosch and yesterday he got assessed and couldn’t feature in the game, unfortunately as well,” Kaze explained.

Shabalala, meanwhile, was left out for tactical reasons, with Kaze offering a brief explanation: “About Shabalala, it was a technical decision.” The trio’s absence added to Chiefs’ challenges on a difficult afternoon, as Amakhosi were outplayed by a clinical Pirates side.
