Former Kaizer Chiefs defender Tsepo Masilela has tipped Amakhosi as genuine Betway Premiership contenders, highlighting their consistent results and improved defensive record as key factors in how the rest of their season could unfold.
Chiefs claimed their eighth league win of the campaign, surpassing the 30-point mark and moving into second place on the standings, just two points shy of league leaders Mamelodi Sundowns.
Masilela, a two-time league champion with Chiefs, pointed to the team’s defensive improvements as central to their resurgence. He believes that if the squad maintains their current form and momentum, they have a strong chance of ending their decade-long wait for a league title.
“As they say, strong defences win championships,” Masilela said, on the SoccerBeat Podcast.
“They got the job done, and when you look at their schedule, playing in Africa and coming back to do the job, it shows that they mean business, and we can’t write them off — they are in the mix.
“When you keep on winning like this, it gives you belief, and the dream stays alive.”
A standout feature of Chiefs’ season has been their ability to grind out results, even in matches where they have not dominated possession.
After a previous campaign in which they conceded over a goal per game on average, Amakhosi have tightened up at the back this season, allowing just six goals in 15 matches. Masilela singled out young defender Aiden McCarthy for his growing influence, particularly in the recent clash against Marumo Gallants.
“The young McCarthy was fantastic with how he recovered in the last action to save the ball for a corner kick. You might underestimate it, but that was the challenge that won them the three points on the night, and he was also solid alongside (Zitha) Kwinika.”
