Leinster head into the business end of the season on the verge of making history as they chase an unprecedented EPCR Champions Cup and United Rugby Championship double.

The Irish giants were unbeaten throughout the Champions Cup league phase, often resting frontline players in the URC to ensure their squad peaked for Europe. That strategy has paid off handsomely, with Leo Cullen’s side powering into Saturday’s final in Spain against defending champions Bordeaux Bègles.

Leinster’s route to the final has underlined their status as Europe’s form side. They swept through the pool stages before overcoming Harlequins, French heavyweights Toulouse and English club Northampton Saints in the knockout rounds.

Should they add a fifth title in Europe’s premier competition this weekend, attention will quickly turn to the URC, where South African teams could yet spoil the party.

Leinster finished second in the league standings behind the Glasgow Warriors, ensuring a home quarter-final and semi-final should they progress. A final in Scotland would then await should the top two seeds both advance.

Should Leinster achieve the first part of their dual mission in Bilbao, a URC quarter-final against the Lions awaits in Dublin next weekend, with the Johannesburg side aiming to continue their breakthrough season after qualifying for the play-offs for the first time in the URC era.

Should Leinster progress, a likely semi-final against the Stormers looms. The Cape side remain dangerous knockout opponents and one of the few teams with a proven record of troubling Irish opposition in recent seasons.

No team has previously lifted both the Champions Cup and URC trophies in the same campaign, leaving Leinster within reach of a landmark achievement.
