The Bulls strengthened their push for a home United Rugby Championship (URC) quarter-final with a commanding 54-19 victory over Zebre in Pretoria, and all roads now lead to Loftus Versfeld on Saturday afternoon for their final round-robin clash against Benetton.
A victory would guarantee the Bulls a home quarter-final, and, judging by the way they tore Zebre apart with ball in hand, confidence in the camp will be sky-high heading into the final weekend of league action.
What stood out most against the Italian side was the Bulls’ willingness to play with width and tempo. They moved the ball confidently, attacked from deep and repeatedly stretched Zebre’s defence with a slick running game that produced eight tries. Their forwards laid a solid platform up front, but their prowess in open play caught the eye.
Even when the match became loose, the Bulls looked comfortable. They played with freedom and accuracy, turning broken play into attacking opportunities and showing the sort of interplay between the backs and forwards that will be needed once the knockout stages begin.
Benetton, meanwhile, arrive in Pretoria wounded after suffering a heavy 46-7 defeat to the Sharks in Durban. Despite that result, the home side is wary of underestimating another Italian opponent. They have shown throughout the season that they are capable of being highly competitive and far more organised than the Zebre side that collapsed at Loftus on Saturday.
Bulls head coach Johan Ackermann will now focus on building momentum ahead of the play-offs while they secure valuable log points for a Top 4 spot. The performance against Zebre offered encouraging signs, especially considering the number of changes made to the starting side.
Ackermann rotated heavily and gave several fringe players extended opportunities, a move that paid off as the team maintained their intensity and accuracy for most of the contest, despite errors still creeping in. The strong squad depth could prove vital when the knockouts arrive.
However, there is concern about the fitness of wing Cheswill Jooste after he picked up a hamstring injury. He was substituted just before halftime after a strong showing and scored a stunning try. If he is ruled out, Ackermann may have to reshuffle the backline ahead of the Benetton clash.
Still, the expectation is that Ackermann will restore many of his frontline players this weekend, including halfback-pairing Embrose Papier and Handré Pollard, as he looks to settle combinations and sharpen his strongest side before the quarter-finals.
With Loftus expected to be buzzing and a home play-off spot within reach, the Bulls will see Saturday as another opportunity to send a statement to the rest of the URC ahead of the knockouts.
