While it will take a collective effort from all four South African franchises to maintain their unbeaten runs in the United Rugby Championship (URC), they will still look to key individuals to lead the charge in their respective clashes.
The Stormers, Bulls, Lions and Sharks all secured back-to-back victories in the last two URC rounds, and they will be eager to keep that momentum going this weekend. Here, we highlight four players who could prove pivotal to their teams’ fortunes.
Chris Smith | Lions
The flyhalf will once again be central to the Lions’ hopes as they look to upset log leaders Glasgow Warriors at Ellis Park on Saturday. He has been a consistent figure for the Johannesburg outfit, and that is unlikely to change.
Smith remains the competition’s leading points scorer by a comfortable margin and will aim to extend that tally. However, the Warriors will be well aware of his threat, particularly from the kicking tee, and will look to limit his influence.
With the Lions pushing to secure a Top 8 finish, every point will count. Smith’s game management, alongside his halfback partner, will be crucial if they are to put further pressure on a Glasgow side coming off a defeat.
Sacha Feinberg-Mngomezulu | Stormers
The young flyhalf will feel he has a point to prove. He has been under considerable pressure in recent weeks and was deployed off the bench in the Stormers’ last outing in Europe, although that move appeared largely tactical.
Now, back at DHL Stadium, Feinberg-Mngomezulu has an opportunity to take control against a resilient Connacht side packed with experienced Irish internationals. It will not be an easy task, but home advantage could play a significant role.
If handed the starting jersey, there will be an expectation for him to guide an expansive, attacking style of play. The Stormers, meanwhile, will be targeting a convincing win to build momentum heading into the final stretch of the season.
Eben Etzebeth | Sharks
After a quiet return from injury in the EPCR Challenge Cup clash against Connacht, Etzebeth will be expected to make a far greater impact this weekend. The Sharks face a must-win encounter against the Ospreys, and they will need their veteran lock to lead from the front.
Having had an extended lay-off, Etzebeth will be fully aware of what is required in Swansea. His physical presence and uncompromising approach could be decisive, particularly in a high-pressure fixture.
Beyond his on-field contributions, his leadership will be vital. If he can set the tone early and galvanise those around him, it could lift the Sharks as they continue their push for a place in the Top 8.
Ruan Nortjé | Bulls
News of Nortjé’s departure at the end of the season may have raised eyebrows, but it is unlikely to affect his commitment during a crucial phase of the campaign.
While the Dragons may not pose the sternest challenge, Nortjé’s influence at the lineout and his relentless work rate will still be key in Newport. He is also closing in on a personal milestone, with 150 appearances for the Bulls within reach.
If he can disrupt opposition ball and provide a steady platform for his side, the Bulls could look to assert dominance through their forward pack, with powerful rolling mauls likely to be a feature of their approach.
