Lions scrumhalf Haashim Pead is set to take the next step in his career, with reports indicating he will soon be unveiled as the latest athlete to join Roc Nation Sports International.
The global agency, which manages some of rugby’s biggest names — including Springbok captain Siya Kolisi, his World Cup-winning teammate Cheslin Kolbe, and England captain Maro Itoje — appears to have identified the 20-year-old as a standout prospect with genuine global appeal.
Pead, a former World Rugby Under-20 Championship winner with the Junior Springboks, has rapidly built a reputation at Ellis Park for his game-breaking ability and sharp rugby intelligence. His decision-making, control of tempo, and instinctive reading of the game have already marked him out as a player well beyond his years.
He recently scooped the 2025 SA Junior Springbok of the Year Award.
It is little surprise that the Lions have moved to secure his services until 2028. However, they may soon face competition in retaining him. Independent Media understands that a number of South Africa’s leading franchises are actively tracking the young scrumhalf.
While unconfirmed, Pead is widely viewed as a potential successor to Grant Williams at the Sharks. Williams is set to leave the Durban-based side at the end of the season to pursue an opportunity in Japan, leaving Springbok Jaden Hendrikse as the only established senior scrumhalf at Kings Park.
A return to Cape Town could also be on the cards. The Stormers, who currently have promising youngster Imad Khan alongside Asad Moos, may view Pead’s pedigree as too good to ignore — particularly with the added pull of a move closer to home.
It is this combination of elite potential and marketability that has drawn the attention of Roc Nation, an agency known for identifying athletes capable of excelling both on and off the field. The organisation has increasingly focused on securing top young talent, with further signings expected to be announced in the near future. Pead’s addition is anticipated to be confirmed next week.
Should the deal go through, Pead will join an impressive stable that includes Kolisi, Kolbe, Sharks playmaker Jordan Hendrikse, and fellow rising star Aphelele Fassi — placing him firmly among rugby’s elite names-in-the-making.
Off the field, Roc Nation’s influence could prove equally significant. The agency is renowned for helping athletes develop their personal brands, secure commercial partnerships, and plan for long-term success beyond their playing careers. For a young player like Pead, such support could be invaluable as his profile continues to rise.
His invitation to a Springbok alignment camp in March further underlines his growing reputation, with head coach Rassie Erasmus and his selectors monitoring his progress closely.
For now, Pead’s focus will remain on game time and continued development. The Lions face a crucial run of fixtures as they push for a first-ever United Rugby Championship play-off berth.
Currently sitting fifth on the table, Pead’s influence — alongside fellow scrumhalves, Springbok Morné van den Berg and Nico Steyn — could prove decisive as the Johannesburg side chase a historic URC quarter-final spot and qualification for the Champions Cup.
