The Bulls are on a “cup final” footing in the race to the United Rugby Championship playoffs, according to their combative lock Cobus Wiese.

That is because their eighth position on the log with five rounds to go is under pressure from a chasing pack of teams that is just outside the coveted top eight, including countrymen the Sharks, who moved up to tenth after beating Cardiff on Friday night.

Home fixtures are of paramount importance, so you can expect the Bulls to throw the kitchen sink at Munster, not that the Irishmen are going to be shrinking violets after their embarrassing defeat to the Sharks last week. They could not score a single point and conceded 45.

A statistical look at this fixture suggests the Bulls are well placed to win.

  • The Bulls’ only loss in their last five URC matches was 19-32 to the Stormers at Loftus Versfeld.
  • The Bulls have not lost to a non-South African side at Loftus in the Championship since Glasgow won there in June 2024.
  • Munster’s last five matches in the URC have been won by the home team on the day. Munster have won just one of their last six away matches in all competitions.

But another statistic indicates that Munster have a decent chance of causing an upset — the two sides have met on four previous occasions, with both teams having two wins apiece. The two most recent clashes have been won by the away team on the day.

On a more practical level, Munster have been boosted by the return of two key players, halfback Craig Casey and Jack Crowley. The Ireland internationals were rested for the Sharks match because of their workload in the Six Nations.
