It’s another make-or-break United Rugby Championship (URC) clash for the Bulls on Saturday at Loftus Versfeld as they take on Munster.

They have the perfect opportunity to secure back-to-back victories; however, a loss would see them head into their European tour with little momentum and a mountain to climb in their bid to secure a Top 8 spot.

If the Bulls allow their visitors to settle, the Irish side have the players to control territory, dictate the tempo of the game and ultimately the scoreboard. That means the hosts must be precise in the key battles that define Munster’s game.

We look at five areas where the Bulls will look to curb Munster to secure a much-needed win in Pretoria (2pm kick-off).

Shutting down the set-piece early

Munster’s DNA runs through their pack.

Although the Bulls boast a formidable scrum, their visitors will look to use that weapon as well. If the home side allows Munster to gain dominance at scrum time, they will concede penalties, territory and momentum.

The same goes for the lineouts, where Munster are efficient and clinical with some experienced players. The Bulls will look for early dominance in the set-piece battle to take those weapons away from their opponents.

Disrupt their composure and put them under pressure

At their best, Munster play with a calm precision. That is how they won their URC title against the Stormers in Cape Town despite not being favourites. They are comfortable moving the ball through the hands even when defensive lines are rushing hard.

That’s where the Bulls’ line speed will be important. They must look to turn that Munster strength into a weakness by forcing decisions. If they can close down space quickly, especially in midfield, and cut off passing options, they will limit Munster’s ability to exploit gaps and space out wide.

The physical and mental battle at altitude

Munster have proven that they can handle South African conditions, including Pretoria’s altitude. That means the Bulls must not rely on them fading late in the game. Instead, they must manage the tempo and pace of play smartly.

It will be about keeping the ball in play when the forward exchanges are on, which can be physically draining. It is a tactic that has worked for the home side in recent outings, but they must do it consistently. Turning the contest into a physical grind could test Munster’s depth over 80 minutes.

Control the kicking battle

Munster’s half-backs possess one of the best tactical kicking games in the URC, and there is clear purpose to it. They do not kick aimlessly — they do so to put teams under pressure by gaining territory and forcing mistakes.

The Bulls’ back three and half-backs need to be sharp here. Poor exits or loose kicks will feed straight into Munster’s plan. Expect a territorial battle, and the side that executes better under pressure will likely come out on top.

Cut off their attacking flow

Munster are a side that thrive when they can string phases together and stretch defences from touchline to touchline. It will not necessarily look pretty, but it is highly effective. Their big ball carriers generate momentum.

If they get over the gain line, the backs will pounce on the gaps it creates, and there are plenty of dangers out wide. The Bulls must slow their ball at the breakdown. Even a slight delay in ruck speed can throw off Munster’s attacking patterns and reduce their effectiveness out wide.
