Sharks' JP Pietersen praises Luan Giliomee's impact, Makazole Mapimpi's enduring class in Munster mauling

Sharks coach JP Pietersen hailed the “unbelievable talent” of teenage fullback Luan Giliomee after his standout debut in the side’s emphatic 45-0 United Rugby Championship victory over Munster at Kings Park on Saturday.

The 19-year-old announced himself in style, scoring a try and assisting two others in a composed display that underlined his promise on the big stage.

“He belongs on that field – he didn’t look out of place,” Pietersen said after the match. “He’s an unbelievable talent and I was excited to see what he could do. He showcased it tonight.”

Giliomee’s performance came in a high-pressure fixture the Sharks had to win to keep their play-off hopes alive, making his impact even more significant. Pietersen stressed the importance of trusting youth in key moments.

“We want to give young guys opportunities in games that matter,” he said. “Today was a pressure game and you could see how he stood up. That’s the way forward for us.”

While Giliomee represented the future, veteran winger Makazole Mapimpi provided a reminder of enduring class on a landmark night. The Springbok marked his 100th appearance with two late tries, putting the finishing touches on a dominant display. “He’s a special human being,” Pietersen said.

“At his age, to still have that speed and professionalism – there’s a lot of rugby left in him. He showed that again.”

Pietersen also praised his team’s physicality and defensive effort, particularly after a disrupted build-up to the match, saying the players “made a statement” with their intensity and work rate.
