Continuity in selection should be cornerstone of Sharks’ URC Top 8 bid
COMMENT
Sharks coach JP Pietersen will have some tough selection calls to make over the next couple of games, but it will be important to have continuity in selection for the Sharks to build up some consistency as they hunt a URC play-off spot.

There comes a point in every season where experimentation must be shown the door. For the Sharks and head coach JP Pietersen, that moment is now.
With only six matches left in the United Rugby Championship (URC), the equation is simple for the men from Kings Park: pick your best team and let them build momentum in the race for the Top 8. There should be no more rotation, only a clear attempt to build consistency as they look to join the other South African sides currently in the URC play-offs race.
Saturday’s grudge match against Munster in Durban (5pm kick-off) isn’t just another fixture — it must be a line in the sand where the Sharks begin fielding their strongest available side for the remainder of the season.
It’s a high-stakes clash where nothing less than victory will suffice — a four-try bonus-point win would be even better. It would strengthen their Top 8 push and, crucially, build momentum heading into the next match at the Shark Tank.
However, after last season’s “wink gate” saga against Munster, the visitors will not arrive in holiday mode; they will come hunting to avenge that defeat. It was an epic encounter that ended in a penalty shoot-out, with a touch of gamesmanship from Sharks scrumhalf Jaden Hendrikse and Munster flyhalf Jack Crowley sealing a dramatic home win after Crowley missed his kick.
Munster will remember that moment — and that is precisely why the Sharks cannot afford to be anything less than settled.
A strong, settled side with selection continuity against the Stormers produced performances that highlighted the Sharks’ potential. Then came the tinkering against the Lions — and a loss. The response? A near full-strength return against the Bulls, only to be dismantled at Loftus Versfeld.
That inconsistency is not just about form, but cohesion as well. It is something the Sharks have lacked. Although it was briefly restored under Pietersen against the Stormers, the subsequent changes saw the side exposed in Gauteng.
The path forward must be clear. Injuries aside, Pietersen and his assistants must select their strongest team and back them. Let them face Munster together, and then again, the following week. Give them the opportunity to build the type of momentum that allowed them to dismantle the Stormers, rather than forcing them to continually rebuild combinations.
Only six games remain. There is no time for tinkering — now it is about putting the best possible 23 on the park and backing them to generate the winning momentum needed to secure a place in the Top 8.
