There is rarely a dull North-South derby between the Bulls and Stormers, and Saturday’s clash in Pretoria arrives with both pride and playoff ambitions firmly on the line.
Two of South Africa’s most successful United Rugby Championship (URC) sides meet at Loftus Versfeld in a rescheduled clash knowing the final result could shape their ambitions and run to the business end of the season.
With the Bulls and Stormers facing off in the only URC match of the weekend — while the Six Nations reaches a tense conclusion in Europe — both teams will be desperate to build winning momentum ahead of the competition’s restart.
Loftus Versfeld hosts the derby, and with seven matches remaining for the arch-rivals, the time has arrived to make a serious push for top four spots on the official log. The Stormers currently occupy fifth place after three consecutive losses against South African opposition.
In the SA Shield they sit at the bottom, and another defeat would confirm them as the poorest-performing derby side this season. But they remain the leading South African team on the overall points table and know victory is non-negotiable if they want to stay ahead of the chasing pack.
A win in Pretoria would also lift them back into third place. Should the Stormers secure victory and claim a four-try bonus point, they could climb as high as second on the standings.
However, this is easier said than done.
Their form over the last couple of months has been patchy and something is not quite clicking within the side. Finding answers against a confident Bulls outfit will be a serious challenge. The Stormers are known for producing brave efforts at Loftus, but this time they will need more than grit to topple the home team.
Their scrum will come under heavy scrutiny, while the Cape side’s misfiring attack and shaky defence must improve significantly from what was on display against the Sharks and Lions. If they cannot rediscover their scoring touch, their chances of victory will be slim.
For the Bulls, the formula is simple: continue the momentum built over the last two outings against fellow South African teams. Their URC record against the Stormers is not particularly good — even at Loftus — but for once they head into the clash with confidence and cohesion on their side.
Johan Ackermann’s team appears to be finding its rhythm at the perfect moment and could mount a genuine push for a home quarter-final when considering their remaining fixtures. Two games stand out as major tests — against the Stormers and Munster — but beyond that the Bulls will believe they have a realistic opportunity to climb the standings.
Saturday’s derby also presents the chance to avenge their defeat in Cape Town earlier this season, something that will undoubtedly fuel their motivation. By the end of the afternoon, the winner could emerge as South Africa’s strongest contender for a deep run in this year’s tournament.
