The Bulls have an opportunity to close the gap on the Stormers in the United Rugby Championship (URC) standings this Saturday if they can maintain their winning momentum in the final local derby of the regular season.
All eyes will be on Loftus Versfeld for a much-anticipated North–South clash, with the Stormers arriving in Pretoria under pressure to revive their campaign. The Cape side has suffered three consecutive defeats against South African opposition, and their proud record in home derbies is now under serious threat.
It is the only URC match during the final round of the Six Nations Championship, with the full schedule set to return in two weeks.
Another defeat would condemn the Stormers to the bottom of the South African conference and mark their poorest return in home derbies since the URC began.
They are also well aware that the Bulls are riding a wave of confidence after a dramatic turnaround in form. The Pretoria side has won four matches in a row, including emphatic victories over the Lions and Sharks in recent weeks. That resurgence underlines the challenge awaiting the struggling Capetonians when they arrive at what many still call Fort Loftus on Saturday.
The hosts will also have their own motivation. The Bulls will be determined to avoid suffering two defeats to the Stormers this season after going down narrowly in a bruising encounter at DHL Stadium in December. However, the Bulls appear to be a very different side now and have flourished since the arrival of new coach Johan Ackermann.
Currently sitting eighth on the URC table, the Bulls know that a full haul of five points would strengthen their grip on a playoff place with only a handful of matches remaining after this weekend. Such a result would also leave them just one point behind the Stormers, giving them a realistic chance of overtaking their long-time rivals in the closing rounds.
The equation for the Stormers in Pretoria is relatively straightforward. A victory would keep them firmly among the top three teams, while a bonus-point win could even lift them into second place.
For now, though, the visitors will be focused solely on ending their losing streak. The standings may offer context, but the Stormers’ immediate priority will be rediscovering their winning rhythm against a confident Bulls outfit.
With both teams chasing momentum heading into the final stretch of the season, Saturday’s clash could prove pivotal in shaping their respective playoff ambitions.
