The Stormers secured the services of Hacjivah Dayimani on a short-term deal until the end of the season, the Cape side announced on Friday.

After cutting his deal short with Racing92 in France, the dynamic loose forward returns to the team he helped win the inaugural United Rugby Championship (URC) as they look to revive their campaign following back-to-back losses against the Sharks.

The Stormers (36 points) dropped into third place after being unbeaten at the start of the season before the two coastal derby losses, but they are still in a commanding position with a match in hand over their nearest rivals.

Defending champions Leinster (2nd, 40 points) and Glasgow Warriors (46) are at the top, and the Cape side must now chase them to regain first place. While the tournament is on a Six Nations break, the Stormers will restart their campaign with an away game at Ellis Park against the Lions at the end of February and Dayimani is available for selection.

Director of rugby John Dobson said that having a player of Dayimani’s qualities back in the fold is a major boost, especially given a recent spate of injuries to key forwards, especially at lock. They are without regular captain Salmaan Moerat and lineout ace Ruben van Heerden for an extended period.

“We all know the qualities that Hacjivah brings and what he adds to the group on and off the field, so it is really exciting to have him back with us,” according to Dobson.

“With the likes of Ruan Ackermann, Salmaan, and Ruben out currently, a versatile player like Hacjivah gives us several different options. I’m sure his return will be welcomed by our fans, who have fond memories of some of his past performances for us.

“He has a remarkable story, and we hope this next chapter here with us will be another one to remember.”

Dayimani said that he is ready to hit the ground running. He left with the blessing of Racing92 as he returns to be closer to his family.

“I have learned a thing or two in my time in France, and I’m happy to be back in Cape Town to contribute wherever I can. This is my home, and playing for this team means a lot to me. I intend to show that on the field and make some more great memories here.”
