Flyhalf Jurie Matthee is the latest Stormers player to commit his future to the side’s Project 2029 after signing a contract extension that will keep him in the Cape for at least the next three seasons.

The 25-year-old is a homegrown talent and, in the absence of Sacha Feinberg-Mngomezulu and Manie Libbok — who is currently playing in Japan — made significant progress as the side’s pivot at the start of the season.

He was instrumental in the opening stages of the United Rugby Championship (URC) when Feinberg-Mngomezulu and Damian Willemse were on Springbok duty and stepped up when the team needed him in high-pressure situations. He has featured in 21 matches since making his debut in 2024 and should add to that tally over the next three years.

Stormers director of rugby John Dobson said Matthee’s development within the Stormers environment has been extremely encouraging.

“Jurie has proven himself to be extremely coachable and applies himself in a way that gives those around him confidence. He has already shown that he is much more than just a steady hand; he is respected by teammates and opposition alike. You underestimate Jurie’s abilities at your peril.

“We are delighted to keep him here long-term and are really looking forward to seeing him develop further within our system.”

Despite not featuring in a lot of matches for the Stormers since the return of Feinberg-Mngomezulu, the flyhalf is still the leading points scorer in the URC with 78 points.

Matthee said there is no place he would rather play his rugby.

“I grew up dreaming about pulling on this jersey and playing for this team. Since coming into the environment, I have grown as a player and look forward to seeing where this journey takes me.

“I feel blessed to represent this club and our fans. The vision we have here for the future is incredibly exciting and I am so glad I get to be a part of it,” he added.
