Springbok Women overcome fierce Kenya challenge to retain title

The Springbok Women were made to work for their fifth successive Rugby Africa Women's Cup title as they fought off a determined Kenya challenge to claim a hard-earned 35-20 victory in Nairobi on Sunday.

Despite entering the match as favourites, South Africa found themselves trailing 8-7 at half-time against a Kenyan side buoyed by passionate home support and determined to spoil the champions' coronation.

The victory completed another successful continental campaign for the Bok Women, but only after they overcame one of their sternest tests of the tournament.

South Africa appeared in control for long periods, dominating possession and territory, yet struggled to convert that advantage into points as Kenya's defence repeatedly held firm and disrupted their rhythm at the breakdown.

The visitors struck first through winger Alichia Arries, who powered over in the corner after a series of close-range attacks. Jakkie Cilliers added an excellent touchline conversion to give South Africa an early 7-0 lead.

Kenya responded impressively through centre Faith Livoi, whose opportunistic try capped a dangerous attacking move sparked by flyhalf Sinaida Mokaya. The hosts then edged ahead when Mokaya slotted a penalty to give the Lionesses a one-point lead heading into the break.

The turning point came early in the second half when the Springbok Women finally began to turn their territorial dominance into points.

Centre Naima Hlatshwayo crossed first before No 8 Logan Welman and wing Cilliers added further tries in a devastating 17-minute spell. Quick ball retention and efficient recycling stretched the Kenyan defence, creating the space South Africa needed to open up what looked like a match-winning advantage.

Yet, Kenya refused to surrender. With 13 minutes remaining, Knight Otuoma crossed to reignite home hopes before Mokaya produced one of the moments of the match, gathering an errant kick and racing down the left touchline for a brilliant solo try.

The score cut South Africa's lead to just two points with five minutes remaining and set up a tense finish.

Cilliers steadied the nerves with two crucial penalty goals before the Springbok Women finally sealed victory after the hooter. Replacement Ntsako Mbombi powered over from a line-out maul for her first international try, with Cilliers adding the conversion to give the final scoreline a more comfortable appearance than the contest had suggested. 

While the scoreboard ultimately reflected a 15-point winning margin, the Bok Women were pushed all the way by a courageous Kenyan outfit that matched the champions physically and threatened a major upset deep into the second half.

In the end, South Africa's composure and superior depth proved decisive as they secured another Rugby Africa Women's Cup title and extended their dominance on the continent.
