André Esterhuizen epitomised what it means to be a team player for the Springboks during their November tour of Europe.

He played a crucial role in the key matches and delivered another outstanding performance against Wales on Saturday evening as the Boks romped to a 73–0 victory.

The result completed another unbeaten northern hemisphere tour for the world champions, following their exploits in 2024. They reinforced their No 1 status in the world and showcased their remarkable squad depth, even while relying on several rookies in the absence of senior players.

Esterhuizen, named Player of the Match at the Principality Stadium, fully embraced the opportunity to start at inside centre. His hybrid skill set has served the Boks well throughout the tour, but he got a rare chance to play in his favourite position.

He combined superbly with Damian de Allende in the midfield, and their powerful partnership provided the South Africans with excellent front-foot attacking ball. Esterhuizen was also rewarded with a well-taken try in the match, one of 11 five-pointers the Springboks scored.

“It was a great game and a great tour,” Esterhuizen reflected, on the victory in Cardiff and going unbeaten in Europe.

“This was a long five weeks, but the boys stuck together over the five weeks, and we had some great results. It is a great feeling to end the tour with a game like this.

“I don't think this game was not tough. When you come here, it is always difficult against Wales, despite what the scoreline suggests. This was very physical. However, we were focused on perfecting our game.”

Esterhuizen credited the togetherness of the group for their success over the last years under head coach Rassie Erasmus.

They claimed 13 victories from 15 matches this season and ensured they built their depth even more by fielding young players, especially against Wales this past weekend.

He said they are very happy that they finished as No 1 in the world ahead of the 2027 Rugby World Cup draw.

“It always helps when you end up on top, and then you probably get the best picks. This is what we worked for this year: to end up as No 1 in the world, and we are very happy to have achieved it.
