Defending champions the Gauteng Golden Fireballs brilliantly avenged their earlier one-point defeat to the North West Flames — sweeping their regional rivals aside 58–28 in Telkom Netball League Power Week 2 action at the Ellis Park Arena in Johannesburg on Saturday night.
The clinical attacking partnership between goal attack Nonsikelelo “Ntsiki” Mazibuko and goal shooter Tinita van Dyk proved entirely decisive as the Fireballs edged a highly competitive opening quarter 16–10. From there, the defending champions tightened their tactical grip on the contest.
The second quarter turned into a complete blowout as Dr Elsje Jordaan’s side imposed themselves physically and defensively — opening up a commanding 32–16 half-time lead before continuing their ruthless dominance after the break.
Although the overall intensity dipped briefly at the start of the fourth quarter, the Fireballs remained firmly in control of the court and eventually coasted to a thoroughly deserved 30-goal victory.
“We know that we weren’t good enough in Power Week 1 and it was really tough for us, but as a group, it brought us much closer together,” Jordaan said in a television interview afterwards. “We were really dominant last year and although this is a new year, the players needed to adapt. We had six new players in our group travelling to Durban, so we always expected it was going to be tough.
“But we knew that as the momentum of the competition picked up, we’d find our stride again and get back to the premium standard we’re used to. The fight is back and it’s good to see them happy again.”
The defending champions were also heavily boosted by the return of defensive stalwart Cornelia Mupenda, whose physical impact on the game was immediate. Mupenda registered one crucial turnover, one intercept, and five deflections in the first half alone as the Flames completely wilted under the relentless defensive pressure from the home side.
The later introduction of powerhouse goalkeeper Amara Agbai only tightened the Fireballs’ stranglehold on proceedings — leaving the Flames struggling to find any meaningful rhythm in attack.
Flames head coach Adine Adriaanse admitted afterwards that her side had simply been completely outplayed on the night.
“They were on it from the very start and we didn’t adapt at all,” she noted. “We had a reasonably good start but after that, we completely let it go.”
Meanwhile, the unbeaten Free State Crinums and Gauteng Jaguars were scheduled to meet later on Saturday night in a highly anticipated clash between the top two teams from the Power Week 1 standings.
