WKS Africa delivered another action-packed night of fights this weekend, serving up high drama, razor-close contests, and a powerful reminder of the rapid growth of Cape Town’s combat sports scene.
Fans, family, friends, and gyms packed the Sunningdale Sports Complex in Milnerton on Saturday night to rally behind their warriors as the promotion hosted the second instalment of its growing fight series. With athletes representing Mauritius, Zimbabwe, and Nigeria alongside local talent, spectators were treated to a vibrant international showcase that underlined the event's rising stature.
Fast becoming recognised as the Mother City’s next fight hub outside of the Grand Arena, the Sunningdale Sports Complex hosted 26 established and up-and-coming kickboxing athletes. The event showcased not only skill and preparation, but also the heart and determination of every fighter involved, as WKS Africa continued to build momentum following its debut event at the Italian Club in Rugby last year.
The night crowned two champions, beginning with the electrifying Charnlee Moyo, who edged Shannon Mbanje via split decision to capture the WKS Lightweight Pro-Am belt after previously advancing through the Grand Prix stages. The main event delivered a highly anticipated rematch between Johannesburg’s Thando Mahlangu and Cape Town rising star Jiyaad Diedericks, with Mahlangu once again emerging victorious to claim the National Bantamweight Kickboxing title.
The result, however, sparked controversy among many in attendance, with a large section of the crowd believing Diedericks had done enough to earn the decision through his relentless volume and front-foot pressure. Mahlangu, by contrast, employed a more patient and calculated approach, picking his moments carefully and landing clean counters against Diedericks’ aggressive attack in what proved to be a thrilling and closely contested headline bout.
The rematch between Brett Heslop and Mauritius’ Sagar Maharoo lived up to expectations. Heslop’s unpredictable yet clinical striking proved challenging for Maharoo. Despite initially being the aggressor, Maharoo eventually resorted to striking only during exchanges initiated by Heslop. Heslop also controlled the pace of the fight by darting in and out of range with precision.
In the latter half of the second round, Heslop landed an uppercut, straight right punch, and body-knee combination. After Maharoo failed to respond, Heslop closed the distance explosively with a stiff jab, right overhand, and left switch knee to Maharoo’s face. The sequence resulted in an immediate knockout, with Heslop getting his hand raised in emphatic fashion.
The co-main event, and arguably the fight of the night, was the Lightweight Pro-Am title bout between Moyo and Mbanje. Both fighters had advanced to the final after winning their respective semi-finals in the four-man Grand Prix tournament for the title.
The second round highlighted a clear clash of styles, with Mbanje’s swift aggression contrasting against Moyo’s patient power. During the round, Moyo delivered a thunderous left hook that sent the entire venue into a frenzy. Mbanje, clearly dazed by the punch, received an eight-count but managed to maintain his composure.
The third round saw Mbanje fighting with urgency as Moyo began to slow down. Visibly fatigued, Moyo engaged less in exchanges and instead relied on elusive boxing-style head movement. Mbanje, meanwhile, controlled the ring space and used long-range punches to pressure Moyo. After a hard-fought battle filled with heart and determination, Moyo secured the split-decision victory and walked away with the Lightweight title.
The main event unfolded as a tactical chess match, with both fighters displaying tenacity and technical skill throughout. After going the distance in a closely contested battle, Mahlangu was crowned the new champion.
