The journey towards the Women’s T20 World Cup starts today in Potchefstroom. This is according to Proteas Women’s captain Laura Wolvaardt, with her team set to face Pakistan at the JB Marks Oval (6pm start) in the first of three T20Is.

The Proteas have finished runners-up in two consecutive Women’s T20 World Cups and would like nothing more than to go one step further at Lord’s in London later this year.

But in order to do that, they will need to prepare well, starting with this Pakistan series.

“The journey starts now. I think we want to play our best cricket, hopefully get some wins to get a bit of a roll and a bit of momentum before that big tournament,” Wolvaardt said.

“But yeah, I think all eyes will be on that World Cup with every game we play now.”

Wolvaardt was particularly excited to see how allrounder Nadine de Klerk fares in this Pakistan series after a hugely successful WPL in India where De Klerk played a big role in Royal Challengers Bangalore winning the competition.

“It was awesome to see the likes of Nadine, you know, absolutely smashing it over there,” said Wolvaardt, who was part of the Delhi Capitals side that lost to RCB in the final.

“I think she's learned a lot as a cricketer and her roles over there. She was amazing with the bat and took quite a lot of wickets with the ball. So just nice for her to sort of find that form before coming back here as well.”
