Proteas Women’s stalwart Sune Luus will add to illustrious legacy when she takes the field for Proteas Women’s in the second One Day International against New Zealand at the Basin Reserve in Wellington (midnight start SA time) in the early hours of Wednesday morning.

The veteran all-rounder is set to become only the second South African woman to reach the milestone of 150 caps for South Africa, a testament to her longevity and importance to the national side.

“I’m obviously very happy and excited for it,” Luus said ahead of the clash. “Every time you get onto the field and represent your country is a big honour, and tomorrow is no different. Hopefully, there can be 150 more.

The Proteas won the first ODI, a high-scoring affair that saw South Africa successfully chase down their second-highest target ever thanks to a six off the final ball by starlet Kayla Reyneke.

Luus said they take take a lot of confidence from the result, especially after going down 4-1 in the T20 series leading up to the ODIs

“We made it a lot more difficult than what it was supposed to be, but that’s cricket,” she remarked. “There is going to ebb and flow, there is going to wickets and there is going to be sixes.

“A few learnings we took out of it, if you are the in batter, probably just stay there, it helps the team a lot. But it was just awesome to see the debutant take the responsibility.

A major positive for Luus has been the fearlessness of the next generation. The performance of the team's debutants particularly impressed her.

“It's a great sign for the future of South African cricket,” she said. “It’s awesome just to see the players come in and flourish. When we were younger, I can’t remember being that confident or hitting sixes for fun. It shows how the women’s game has grown.”
