South African-born Shadley van Schalkwyk was the star bowler again for the USA, but it was not enough as his side were soundly beaten by Pakistan in their T20 World Cup Group A clash in Colombo on Tuesday.
Pakistan won by 32 runs after posting an imposing 190/9 in their innings, as the USA could only manage 158/8 in pursuit.
Van Schalkwyk was the standout bowler for the USA once more with a masterful 4/25 - the exact same figures he returned in his previous match.
It means Van Schalkwyk has shot up to the top of the wicket-taking charts at the tournament with eight scalps, and three ahead of the next best.
South African Bowler’s Late Double Strike Fails to Halt Pakistan’s Progress
In fact, the 37-year-old struck twice in an over on two occasions - the sixth and 19th overs of the innings.
However, his double strike at the end was a bit late in arresting the flow of runs as Pakistan had reached 177/4 before he intervened.
Fellow South African and wicketkeeper Andries Gous failed to have much impact on the USA chase as he was out for 13.
Van Schalkwyk’s Stellar Performance Leads USA’s Shock Effort Against India at T20 World Cup
Over the weekend, watching the USA dominate India at the T20 World Cup was an absolute joy for the neutral, which included many Proteas fans, and driving the shock performance was Van Schalkwyk.
Van Schalkwyk claimed incredible figures of 4/25 to help reduce India to 77/6 in the 13th over.
However, India skipper Suryakumar Yadav helped India launch a phenomenal comeback with an unbeaten knock of 84 from 49 to rescue his side as they posted a decent total of 161/9. Ultimately, the USA fell 29 runs short in their chase.
At six down though, it looked as though one of the biggest upsets in world cricket was on the cards.
